He then moved to Columbia for postdoctoral research in Prof. Elena Aprile's group to work on the first tonne-scale dark matter search experiment XENON1T. He became an assistant professor at the Department of Physics, Tsinghua University in 2020 and was promoted to associate professor in 2022. Prof. Gao specialized in dark matter and neutrino experiments. He is a member of the XENON experiment and serves as an analysis coordinator (until 2021)
