the US, fertility rates fell after the Great Recession. Total fertility has
remained below the replacement level of 2.1 births per woman and continued to
decline between 2014 and 2020. Low birth rates pose policy challenges,
exacerbating the aging population. Flexible work-family policies may offer a
solution to stem or reverse the decline in fertility, as they shorten career
interruptions for working parents and help facilitate work and family life
post-childbirth. However, the US is behind other high-income nations in
providing institutional work-family support, including parental leave,
