Despite being an inhospitable environment, researchers have found whole communities of microorganisms living in the often incredibly thick layer of sediment at the bottom of the Earth’s oceans. Microbes have even been found in the layer of rock beneath – the so-called upper oceanic crust. But what about the layer of rock below that – the lower oceanic crust?
