Guangzhou's Nansha District held a dragon boat race Monday to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on June 10 this year. Nearly 800 athletes from 32 dragon boat teams competed on the Jiaomen River, showcasing the dedication and love of the Guangdong locals for dragon boat racing, with nearly 10,000 spectators cheering for the game. The dragon boat race is a folk custom carrying on for thousands of years in Lingnan region, and the history of this game in Nansha can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). This year's dragon boat race has upgraded the scale with two more events: a men's 22-person 300-meter straight dragon boat race and a mixed 12-person 300-meter straight dragon boat race. These 32 teams came from ten towns and sub-districts in Nansha, gathering the most skilled dragon boat rowers in the district.
