Financial support by China could help to curb the refugee crisis while building trust in China-EU relations. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as of January 19, over 4.6 million Syrians had fled the terror of the Islamic State (also known as ISIS) and Bashar al-Assad’s barrel bombs. Most of those refugees ended up in Turkey, Lebanon, or Jordan, but a significant number sought refuge in Europe. China is far from becoming a preferred destination for migrants from the Middle East, and the Chinese government is also not going to open its doors to refugees.
