We’ve come far in the HIV response: the end of AIDS as a public health threat is achievable by 2030 – but only if everyone’s rights are protected. The progress that has been made so far, in the HIV response, has been driven by biomedical advances, as well as advances in the protection of human rights. But big gaps still remain in the protection of rights, and they are keeping the world from getting on the path that ends AIDS. Plus, the surge in attacks on rights is even endangering the gains that have been made already. In 2023, 1.3 million people around the world newly acquired HIV – three times higher than the global target set for 2025 of no more than 370,000.
