Astronomy aficionados across the globe are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the year's first "Supermoon," which illuminates the night sky in the wee hours of August 20. A Supermoon occurs when the Moon reaches its fullest phase, or "Full Moon," while simultaneously being at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit. This rare alignment, where the Moon and Sun stand on opposite sides of the Earth with a 180-degree difference in their ecliptic longitudes, results in the Moon appearing exceptionally large and luminous in the night sky. Full Moons can occur anytime between the 14th and 17th of the lunar month. This year's first Supermoon reached peak fullness at 2:26 am on August 20, whereas the Moon's closest encounter with Earth, or perigee, takes place at 1:00 pm on August 21.
