🎧 Loneliness is a health crisis comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. Here’s how to combat it Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, has been outspoken about the mental and physical health impacts of loneliness. Earlier this year, he announced an advisory on the healing effects of social connection and community. “The harmful consequences of a society that lacks social connection can be felt in our schools, workplaces, and civic organizations, where performance, productivity, and engagement are diminished,” the advisory reads. “We are called to build a movement to mend the social fabric of our nation…each of us can start now, in our own lives, by strengthening our connections and relationships.” Murthy says it’s urgent to address isolation and build community within our local institutions, as loneliness is widespread—and experienced by anybody.
