NB: This may not be a word-for-word transcript. Message by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Universal Health Coverage Day 12 December 2024 When you need health services, can you access them? Can you afford them? Shockingly, half the world’s population cannot access one or more essential health services. And two billion people experience financial hardship because of out-of-pocket health spending. That means families have to choose between health care or their next meal, medicines or school books. While access to services has been improving globally, using those services is driving more and more people into financial hardship or poverty. Health for all is a fundamental human right and the foundation of sustainable development. Universal Health Coverage Day is a reminder that health for all means everyone can access the health services they need without financial hardship. That’s the world that WHO is working for.
