为什么leave既能表示“离开”，也能表示“留下”？

最近我在小红书上刷到了一个帖子，里面有家长表示不知道怎么回答儿子的问题：为什么leave既能表示“离开”，也能表示“留下”？ 如果单看词汇表里面的中文解释，确实会让人产生这样的困惑，不知道怎么用这个词。 但如果结合单词的英语释义和搭配，那么就很容易判断了。 单词表示“离开”时，柯林斯词典中的解释是：If you  leave a place or person , you go away from that place or person. 此时单词的搭配是leave somebody/something，比如：I hate leaving home. 我讨厌离开家。 单词表示“留下”时，柯林斯词典的解释是： If you  leave something or someone  in a particular place , you let them remain there when you go away. If you  leave something or someone  with a person , you let them remain with that person so they are safe while you are away. 也就是说，单词此时的搭配是：leave + object + place，或者leave + object + with ………………………………
